g Check your base
Your base needs to be solid or in excellent condition. Bedstead bases are generally good as long as there are no broken slats or oversized gaps. Platform top divan bases are fine as long as there is no dips. With sprung divan bases, we would always advise changing as they often collapse causing the new mattress to follow.
g Check your mattress size
Standard UK sizes are as follows
Small Single 2’6 x 6’3 75 x 190cm (approx) Single 3’0 x 6’3 90 x 190cm (approx) Small Double 4’0 x 6’3 120 x 190cm (approx) Double 4’6 x 6’3 135 x 190cm (approx) King 5’0 x 6’6 150 x 200cm (approx) Superking 6’0 x 6’6 180 x 200cm (approx)
Some mattresses are available in continental and IKEA sizes as well as zip and link options.
g Know your room size
If you have a divan bed, the size is the same as the mattress. Bedsteads are wider and longer than the mattress, some only a few inches, but some can add around 10-12 inches extra in length.
g Have a realistic budget
Times are hard at the moment for many people, but a mattress is one of the most important parts of your daily life. At Sound Sleep we will always work with your budget, but as mattress specialists, we will also show you what a little extra money will get you. Sometimes as little as £50 can make a huge difference in the quality of a mattress. Its also worth thinking of the cost in pence per night. For example £400 over 6 years is 18pence a night!
g Ask for help!
Buying a new mattress is not something you do very often and at Sound Sleep we have over 100 mattresses on our shop floor, which without guidance can be a mine field! Our mattress specialists are highly trained and can advise you on your needs and can point you in the right direction. If you try too many mattresses, sometimes they can start to feel very similar and may leave you confused!
Asking for help does not commit you to buy, we are not commission based and do not believe in hard sell. We want to make you feel welcome and relaxed and make mattress buying something to enjoy!
g Give yourself enough time
Buying a mattress is not a 10 minute job. If you have plenty of time, you are able to try suitable mattresses and lay on them for a reasonable amount of time so you make the correct choice. We will be on hand for any questions you have.
g Find out what mattresses are suitable for you
Once you have established whether you prefer firm, medium or soft, there is then a choice of mattress constructions:
Open Coil - Wire coils joined together by spiral helicals, these are used mostly in lower end mattresses.
Miracoil - Intelligent zoned coils that give a firmer centre section to support your lower back and hips. This is exclusive to Silentnight.
Pocket Springs - Individual springs in their own pocket which move independently to give better support and less partner disturbance. These are available in a variety of spring counts starting from 600. As a rule, the higher the spring count, the more support the mattress offers. The Sealy Posturetech unit works similar as they are hinged coils which work similar to pocket springs.
Manmade fillings - Polyester is used for price, comfort and good recovery.
Natural filings - Cotton absorbs moisture and is breathable. Wool has a more luxurious feel and is naturally more fire retardant and is also breathable.
Memory Foam - Designed to mould to the shape of your body, supporting you entirely and relieves pressure points. Some people can find memory foam warm, as it responds to heat. We have alternatives like LATEX.
Latex - Latex is made from a rubber liquid which is whipped with air, making foam rubber. This is a natural product that pushes back against the body, giving excellent support without heat and the sinking feeling some people find with memory foam. Latex should make you feel cooler in summer time and warmer in winter.
Our mattress specialists are more than happy to guide you through some suitable options, then can leave you to have a try. You should now try mattresses working on process of elimination. Once you find one that feels comfortable and supportive - that should be the one!
Sometimes, bad backs and aching joints are caused by your old mattress. But also be aware that a new mattress may not cure any aches, but will keep you supported and hopefully prevent further discomfort.
A new mattress does take some getting used to and may feel strange for a few weeks.
